How To Make Classic Margherita Pizza: A Taste of Italy at Home

Making a classic Margherita Pizza involves a few simple, high-quality ingredients and some key steps to achieve that authentic Italian flavor. Here's how to make it:

Ingredients:

Pizza Dough: You can either make your own or use store-bought. For homemade, you'll need flour, water, yeast, and a pinch of salt.

Tomato Sauce: Use canned San Marzano tomatoes for the best flavor, blended with a bit of salt.

Fresh Mozzarella Cheese: Slice it or tear it into small pieces.

Fresh Basil Leaves: For that unmistakable Margherita aroma and flavor.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: A drizzle for flavor and to help the pizza cook perfectly.

Salt: To taste.

Instructions:

Prepare the Dough:

If you're making the dough from scratch, mix the flour, water, yeast, and salt. Knead until smooth, then let it rise until doubled in size. Divide it into balls for individual pizzas.

Preheat your oven to its highest setting, ideally between 475°F (245°C) and 500°F (260°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to preheat as well.

Shape the Pizza:

On a floured surface, stretch out one ball of dough into a round shape, about 10-12 inches in diameter. Be gentle to avoid deflating the dough too much.

Add the Toppings:

Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a small border around the edge.

Distribute slices of fresh mozzarella cheese evenly on top of the sauce.

Drizzle a little extra-virgin olive oil over the top and add a pinch of salt.

Bake the Pizza:

Carefully transfer the pizza to the preheated pizza stone or a baking sheet.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Finishing Touches:

As soon as the pizza comes out of the oven, add fresh basil leaves. The heat will release their aroma without wilting them too much.

Drizzle a little more extra-virgin olive oil on top if desired.

Serve:

Slice and serve hot.

The beauty of Margherita Pizza lies in its simplicity and the quality of its ingredients. Each component plays a crucial role in creating a harmonious and delicious pizza. Enjoy your homemade Margherita Pizza!
